Hint on the title character
I noticed that the character has a distinctive similarity with Darth Vader because they both wear black, they appear normal before they were disfigured behind a mask/helmet, they have voice boxes attached on their torsos, they lived in their own private chambers, they're not evil but enslaved to evil and cruel masters, and they have endure pain and suffering before death. They also both desire the love and devotion for their own loved ones even though they remain dark in the climax.

quick tip to sync audio
Hi Archive users,
If you download this and use VLC (or your video player of choice) to watch it, use the Track Synchronization tool to set the audio track synchronization to -2.050 s. It's just a little over 2 seconds off.
That will fix the lipsync right up! :)

Big screen
When I first saw this on the big screen, it was on a double bill with ROCKY HORROR, on ROCKY's initial release. Up until some guy a few rows up farted, I thought I had the theater to myself. Out of the two' I thought this was the better film.

If you're a Rocky Horror fan you should know about this
Released by 20th century Fox, a year before the now classic adaptation of Richard O'Brien's campy musical. "Phantom of the Paradise" is basically a satirical glam rock update of "Phantom of The Opera" with a bit of "Faust" and "Dorian Gray" mixed in. Kind of the same way that "Rocky" is a glam rock spoof of Frankenstein, haunted house, and alien movies. Another connection to Rocky is that Phoenix is played by Jessica Harper who would later play Janet in "Shock Treatment "
